When travellers want to tack a few beach days onto their Vietnam trip, the two names that come up most are Phu Quoc and Mui Ne. They’re quite different, so here’s how I help people choose.
Phu Quoc — the island resort escape
Phu Quoc is an island off the south-west coast, and it’s where you go for proper resort comfort: soft sand, warm clear water, and everything from family-friendly hotels to genuine five-star luxury. It’s ideal for honeymoons, for families who want a pool and a kids’ club, or for anyone who just wants to switch off at the end of a busy itinerary.
- Best for: resorts, honeymoons, families, snorkelling and island-hopping.
- Getting there: a short domestic flight, usually via Saigon.
- Lovely: roughly November to April, the drier months.
Mui Ne — the laid-back coast
Mui Ne, on the mainland a few hours from Saigon, has a different, breezier character. It’s known for its dramatic red and white sand dunes, a long strip of casual beachfront stays, and steady winds that make it one of Asia’s kite-surfing capitals. It’s more relaxed and better value than Phu Quoc, and you can reach it by road without another flight.
- Best for: kite-surfing, the dunes, easy-going budgets, a quick coastal add-on.
- Getting there: by road from Saigon — no domestic flight needed.
- Lovely: roughly December to April.
So, which one?
If you picture a polished resort and turquoise water, go Phu Quoc. If you’d rather a relaxed, windswept coast you can reach overland — and maybe try kite-surfing — choose Mui Ne. Still torn? Tell me who’s travelling and what you’re imagining, and I’ll point you to the right one (or work both into a bigger trip).
